Why Me?

“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind” – Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NIV)

There is a question that echoes through every human heart — “Why me?”

It rises not from despair, but from a deep, God‑given longing to understand the purpose behind our existence. We sense instinctively that we are more than flesh and bone, more than instinct and impulse. We were crafted with intention.

It’s why humanity builds, dreams, creates, and remembers. Something in us reaches beyond survival toward significance. Yet even the greatest achievements fade. Empires crumble. Names once celebrated slip quietly into history. What was urgent becomes irrelevant. Life moves on.

And still, the question lingers: Why am I here? What was the point of my part in this unfolding story?

Mark Twain once said, “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”

But the truth is, only the One who created us can reveal that “why.”

When we search for purpose apart from God, we grope in the dark — chasing meaning in success, influence, or accomplishment. Yet none of these can satisfy the God‑shaped space within us. As Myles Munroe wisely observed, “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.”

Without God, we misuse our lives, our gifts, and even our desires.

But Scripture brings clarity:

“Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”  — Ecclesiastes 12:13

This is not a call to fear in terror, but to live in reverent awe — to anchor our lives in the One who formed us. In Him, purpose is not something we chase; it is something we receive.

Reflection

  • Where am I currently looking for meaning — in my achievements, my identity, or in God Himself?
  • In what areas of my life am I “fumbling in the dark” instead of inviting God to reveal His purpose?
  • How does knowing that God created me intentionally reshape the way I view my daily life and decisions?

Prayer

Lord, quiet my restless heart. Teach me to seek my purpose in You alone. Fill the spaces in me that achievement cannot reach. Help me walk in the calling You designed for my life, with humility, clarity, and joy. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
