The True Fire of Justice
I feel compelled to speak—not to add to the noise, but to offer a measured Christian reflection on the issue dominating our headlines.
The Weaponisation of Race
Race, a natural product of genes and geography, has been weaponised throughout history to justify ambition and power. Its underlying messages remain chillingly familiar:
- “I am better than you.”
- “You are worthless.”
- “Your difference proves imperfection.”
- “I deserve more of life’s benefits.”
These attitudes mask insecurity and drive discrimination—whether open abuse, subtle bias, or institutional injustice.
Echoes Across Centuries
Sarah Moore Grimke’s plea still haunts us:
“All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks.”
That image, voiced over 150 years ago, is still poignant in injustices we witness today. The instinct is rage and despair, yet I felt a caution I pray others will recognise.
Fire That Burns or Light That Reveals
Injustice must be called out. Protest gives voice to the voiceless and discomforts the complacent. But fire is a funny thing—it can torch everything or illuminate hearts. One provokes suppression; the other invites empathy and reform.
A Universal Grief
As a black man, I feel racism’s sting. Yet my heart also grieves for the Rohingya, Chechen, Palestinian, and Uighur peoples; for the elderly, disabled, trafficked, and victims of ethnic cleansing. Division is humanity’s favourite tool for self‑advancement.
Soul Searching and Reform
We live in an imperfect world where injustice is the outworking of insecurity. Reform comes either through enlightenment or through systems that enforce consequence. The global protests cry for both—justice and transformation.
But lasting change demands soul searching, uncomfortable conversations, and sacrifice of privilege. Without these, our outrage becomes fleeting fireworks when what we need are quiet lamps for reflection.
The Hope
Only then will the extremes of black and white form a beautiful frame, not a polarising wedge. May we not revisit Grimke’s words in another century, still pleading for the same mercy.
